Volcanoes, Everywhere – Visit Volcano, HI
Hawaii is a well-known vacation location because of its warm weather, beautiful beaches, and exciting attractions, as we have discussed before. Because they are islands that only exist in the ocean as a result of volcanic activity, it probably won’t come as a surprise that the islands are also popular for their volcanoes. If fact, the National Park service reports that there are five volcanoes on the Big Island of Hawaii alone, three of which are even still considered active. Volcanoes are so significant on Hawaii, there is a national park dedicated to volcanoes that borders a town called Volcano on the Big Island.
The town of Volcano, HI is small, with only a couple thousand people reported as living there, but it does offer a range of exciting opportunities for anyone looking to experience the more volcanic side of Hawaii. At the nearby national park, you can take tours, go for hikes, bike, camp, and listen to speaker presentations in “After Dark in the Park.” After Dark in the Park is an event that takes place every Tuesday and focuses on a different topic each week. Depending on how long your stay in Hawaii is, you might be able to catch at least one or two of the unique presentations while experiencing the beauty of the National Park at night.
With all of these options, it is safe to say you should have more than enough volcano related activities at your fingertips. But, if you want more options, the park’s calendar is constantly updating with more specialized events like festivals, workshops, and more. If that’s still not enough for you, there are also several kinds of tours that will take you all over the island to view the different volcanoes and the evidence of their volcanic activity. You might even get the chance to go see a stream of lava as is slowly makes it way across the island. However, if you’re going to do that you should take some time to be prepared for where you are going and what to expect.
Of course, if you eventually get tired of learning about large mountains and molten rock, the town’s location on the Big Island means that you have plenty of other opportunities to keep yourself entertained. From tours to beaches to restaurants, we all know that there are all kinds of attractions on Hawaii.
